Edible Tours
Books like Lonely Planet have crews of people to research exciting and wonderous locations for world travelers. Unfortunately, they normally don't live in the locations they are researching and miss some of the most recent places opening to the public. Tours for the public are new for Frutas del Mundo as it is a working farm and the owner's accomplishments make many demands on his time with the daily operation as well as consulting all over Guatemala and Honduras. For this reason tours are only on Wednesdays and Saturdays so only by reservation can we accomodate you so you won't miss an opportunity of a lifetime. Visitors will see the world's largest fruit, the world's hottest chili, the world's fastest growing plant, taste the miracle fruit and then dine on a freshly caught tillapia raised right there on the farm for lunch while drinking a freshly prepared juice from one of the fruits on the farm.
No two tours are the same because we never know what may come up and different fruits produce at different times. But they all begin with meeting in Rio Dulce or where ever our agreed upon location is. Then we go to Buenos Aires to either meet Dwight and begin our journey down the dirt road to his farm or, we can walk there to view the countryside and visit an unexcavated Mayan settlement on the way. Depending upon your interests, abilities or disabilities, we tour the acerage along seemingly hidden paths using peanuts for ground cover. Along the way you will see, smell and taste a variety of different fruits and spices in the field depending on what is in season. Many that you probably have not heard of before, let alone tasted. Come with an adventurous palate because some take an open mind to accept. Some smell terrible but have incredible flavors that you can not even imagine. Others you will know but may not recognize in its native state and some will confuse your tastebuds into sensing something other than what it is. You will finish our walk with a Tillapia lunch caught fresh during your tour right out of the pond which irrigates the orchards with a refreshing juice drink made with a seasonal fruit you observed on the tour.
After lunch you have a choice of cooling off in the local stream or just relaxing and deciding which fruits you would like to purchase to share with others. Or even decide which plants you would like to give your hand at growing. At least this is the general concept of our tours. As I said, they are all different which depends upon your interests and what you would like to see, taste or learn. Whatever your desires, we are sure you will leave with memories for a lifetime.
