Propogation Methods and Nursery Management

For many fruit trees, it takes many years for them to mature before they begin bearing fruit. To speed this process, grafting a healthy root system onto a young sprout can bring the tree to maturity in one to two years instead of six to twelve. There is even a method of turning the roots upside down and grafting onto that, but now we are already getting more technical than I am. Dwight has been doing this for many of his trees and has also been teaching it to farmers here in Guatemala. He also has a world of wisdom in many other areas that can be gone over during the course of one workshop. For the serious people who are interested, there are many tricks of the trade that can be learned. These methods for propogating plants can lead you to an amazing future.

If you have land large enough for speculating on a future, Frutas del Mundo has many marketable fruit trees that are not yet mass marketed. The rambutan is just one example that has been proven effective here in Guatemala. If you are interested, arrange an appointment and your land can be evaluated and planned. Then you can have your guardian attend a workshop to see how the process works to train other workers and your investment is one its way.

Nursery management is another of Dwights's specialties that he has taught over the years. Also, many plants need to be propogated in different ways. Here many can just have a branch cut off and stuck in the dirt for it to grow. Others are more complicated and have special requirements in order for them to begin their process, this and many other topics can be gone over.

Rio Dulce

Paper Making

Continuing with the recycling and back to nature theme, here is a workshop I offer. You can recycle and make paper out of banana trunks, old computer paper, napkins, newspaper (if you don't mind a grey paper), egg cartons, or any fiberous plant or paper you no longer need. It's easy and you only need a few basic supplies to do it.

Now you won't be making that fine, smooth paper you use for typing and stuff, but you can make some beautiful papers for drawing, wrapping, or covering books. You can even inlay small leaves, feathers and a variety of other flat yet interesting things. You can also learn how to mold the pulp into bowls or other shapes that you can use. This is a great project even for kids.
